ABOUT

2018 – CALLING ALL NASTY WOMEN ARTISTS:

This is the Memphis exhibit of the Nasty Women Exhibition that took place in Queens, NYC.  We are a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and reproductive rights.

STILL HERE.  STILL FIGHTING.:

Last time we were responding to the inauguration, now we respond to the confirmation of Kavanaugh.  Now is the perfect time to let out our frustrations through art and use that artwork for positive change.  Not only do we want our voices to be heard, but we also hope the new exhibition will bring more energy to the midterm elections on November 6, 2018.  Our exhibit serves as a fundraiser to support our local Planned Parenthood and to echo the platform for organization after the Trump Presidential Inauguration in January 2017.

WHO DO WE WANT INVOLVED?

Nasty Women Artists of all ages, races, religions, sexes, sexual orientations, gender or non-gender identifications, economic backgrounds, immigrants and non-immigrants.  The subject matter is up to the artist who identifies as, or supports a Nasty Woman.

If the artist chooses to allot more than 50% from the sale of their art, up to 100%, please indicate such intent in your submission or at the time of acceptance.

There is no fee to participate in the show if you provide a piece to sell in the exhibition.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SELL YOUR WORK:

We will still accept it because we understand how valuable it is to show your work and participate in solidarity with other Nasty Women.  We will mark your work NFS, however we ask that you then either:

  • donate a second work that can be sold
  • make a $10 donation to the NASTY WOMEN Memphis exhibit after acceptance and upon drop-off, and an additional donation yourself to Planned Parenthood

INSTALLATION PLAN:

Inside the South Main Artspace Lofts Gallery space we will install large, pink, free-standing letters covered in black mesh:  “N” and “W” for NASTY WOMEN.  The letters will dramatically create a NASTY WOMEN monument around which submitted works will be displayed.

Each work will represent its own unique voice while being unified by the overall installation. It is the hope that this installation will create a strong visual statement of solidarity.

2D & 3D WORK (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc.):

– All 2D and 3D work must be no larger than 24″ wide and arrive READY TO HANG/INSTALL

VIDEO:

We would like to include video for those of you who are video artists through small monitors and projection. Please be aware that depending on how many video entries we receive we may have to loop multiple works on one monitor/projection. We will of course provide the necessary information to the audience about authorship of each piece.

SOUND:

Sound will be presented on a television installation within the exhibit.  Please contact the curatorial team to discuss specifics if you have alternate ideas.

TEXT:

We welcome writers and text artists to participate!  We will include your written work in a bound book or on the walls of the exhibit for viewing and ask that you provide a nicely printed and framed version of your poem or other written work for sale at the event.

Hi! My name is Tiera Chanel and I think I identify as a Nasty Woman! I hope you like my work and I hope to be able to be featured in your exhibit! I’m new to this market and I hope that I’m able to add something new to it. Whether my work is accepted into the exhibit or not, I just wanted to say that I’m really glad that you’re or you all are making this opportunity available. Thank you so much!
